Fort Zeelandia (Guyana)

Weather…

Fort Zeelandia is located on Fort Island in the Essequibo River and stands as one of Guyana's most significant historical defensive structures from the Dutch colonial era. The fort was constructed around 1744 under the orders of Governor Laurens Storm van 's Gravesande to protect the strategic mouth of the Essequibo River. During this period, the island served as the administrative capital of the Essequibo colony. Built of sturdy brick, the fort featured four bastions at its corners, equipped with cannons to deter enemy vessels. This massive structure replaced earlier wooden fortifications that could not withstand the tropical climate. Inside the walls were quarters for the garrison, powder magazines, and supply stores. Although the fort is now partially in ruins, its thick walls remain a testament to 18th-century Dutch military engineering. In 1999, it was declared a National Monument along with the adjacent Court of Policy Hall and is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.
