Shell Beach is a 120 km stretch of sand and shell fragments on Guyana's northwest coast, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most important nesting sites for sea turtles in the Caribbean, with four species nesting here: leatherback, green, hawksbill, and olive ridley. The area was designated as a protected area in 2010, covering over 100 km². The beach is formed from the accumulation of shell fragments over centuries. It is also an important bird area, with species such as scarlet ibis and ospreys. The nearby communities are primarily Warao Amerindians, who rely on fishing. Tourism is limited and regulated to protect the turtles. The peak nesting season is from April to July. Thousands of turtles nest annually, with leatherbacks being the most common.

Getting there
Reaching this remote 145-kilometer coastline typically requires coordinating a boat journey from regional towns like Mabaruma or Charity. The boat journey weaves through complex coastal mangrove systems before reaching the ocean.
Best season
The best time to visit is strictly during the sea turtle nesting season, which generally runs from March to August. Visiting outside this window means missing the wildlife spectacle, and coastal access can be hampered by rough seas.
Terrain & paths
The coastline is characterized by a unique mix of sandy stretches composed heavily of crushed shells, bordered by dense mangrove swamps. Walking along the beach can be physically demanding due to the loose, coarse surface.
What to bring
Pack comfortable beach walking shoes, extremely strong insect repellent for the mangrove areas, and plenty of sun protection. A red-light flashlight is essential for nighttime turtle observation to avoid disturbing the animals.
Parking
There is absolutely no direct road access to this protected coastline, so vehicles must be securely parked in the departure river towns. All transport to and along the specific nesting sites is conducted purely by local boats.
Safety
Visitors must strictly follow the guidelines of local conservationists to protect the endangered sea turtles. The beach is extremely remote, featuring unpredictable Atlantic tides and massive populations of mosquitoes and sandflies.
Time needed
Given the complex boat travel logistics and the nighttime nature of the turtle wildlife viewing, a stay of two to three days is highly recommended. This provides sufficient opportunity to properly observe the nesting activities.
