Shell Beach stretches for 140 kilometers along Guyana's northwest coast and is a globally significant sanctuary for marine turtles. Four endangered species, including the massive Leatherback, migrate here annually to nest on its shores. The beach itself is remarkable for being composed of billions of tiny, crushed seashells rather than sand. Beyond the waterline, vast mangrove forests provide a habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including the animated Scarlet Ibis and various monkey species. Visitors can stay in rustic eco-camps and participate in nocturnal turtle-watching tours led by local indigenous conservationists. This remote paradise has a raw encounter with nature, far from modern development. Reaching Shell Beach involves a multi-stage journey by boat through winding river systems from Mabaruma or Charity. The best time to visit is during the nesting season between March and August, when the chance to see the turtles and their hatchlings is highest.
