Philippi (Greece)

Weather…

Philippi, located in eastern Macedonia, is an archaeological site of outstanding historical significance and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016. The city was founded in 356 BC by Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, on the site of the former Thasian colony of Krenides. Philippi earned its place in world history as the site of the decisive Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, where Octavian and Mark Antony defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius, Caesar's assassins. Beyond its military importance, the city is a pillar of religious history, as the Apostle Paul established the first Christian community on European soil here in 49/50 AD. Paul also baptized Lydia, recognized as the first European convert to Christianity. Today, visitors can explore the Roman Forum, the prison of Saint Paul, and the ruins of majestic early Christian basilicas that illustrate the city's evolution.
