Nea Anchialos is situated on the shores of the Pagasetic Gulf in the Thessaly region, about 20 kilometers south of Volos. Founded in the early 20th century by refugees from the Black Sea coast, it was built directly over the ruins of ancient Pyrasos and several significant early Christian basilicas. Today, visitors can wander through impressive archaeological sites featuring intricate mosaics and historic foundations that tell the story of the area's long history. The town blends its profound historical legacy with a lively seaside atmosphere, making it a unique destination in central Greece. The coastline at Nea Anchialos features the expansive Nea Agchialos beach (also known by its Greek spelling Νέα Αγχιάλος), characterized by its dark sand and clean, calm waters. The seafront promenade is famous for its 'tsipouradika', traditional eateries specializing in the local spirit, tsipouro, served with an endless array of seafood meze dishes. This culinary tradition is a hallmark of the town's identity and is best enjoyed during a leisurely afternoon by the gulf. Surrounded by fertile vineyards, the area is also noted for its wine production. Nea Anchialos is a well-suited spot for travelers who enjoy combining archaeological exploration with exceptional local flavors and the peaceful ambiance of the Pagasetic Gulf.
