Almyros is a significant town in southeastern Thessaly, positioned in a vast plain near the Pagasetic Gulf. The region's heritage is deeply rooted in the ancient city of Halos, which was a prominent maritime and trade center during the classical and Hellenistic periods. The modern town of Almyros was re-established in the 19th century approximately 7 kilometers inland to protect inhabitants from pirate raids. In 1980, a severe earthquake struck the area, causing extensive damage and leading to a comprehensive urban redesign. Today, Almyros is the core of one of Greece's most productive agricultural districts, specializing in wheat, tobacco, and olives. A key cultural attraction is the Archaeological Museum of Almyros, located in an elegant neoclassical building, which houses significant finds from across the Magnesia region. Nearby, the Kouri Forest, a rare lowland oak forest, serves as a vital ecological site and a popular recreational area for residents and visitors alike.
