Ancient Olympia
Olympia, located in the fertile plain of Elis in the Peloponnese, is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and one of the most important sanctuaries of Ancient Greece. The sanctuary, known as the Altis, was dedicated to the god Zeus and once housed the monumental Temple of Zeus, which featured the colossal chryselephantine statue of the god, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Starting in 776 BC, the games were held here every four years, mandating a sacred truce among rival city-states and elevating athletic competition to a cultural good. The site includes the ancient stadium, the hippodrome, the Heraion (the oldest temple on the site), and facilities like the palaestra and gymnasium for athlete training. Excavations have unearthed significant masterpieces of Greek art, such as the Hermes of Praxiteles. Olympia was not merely a sports venue but a vital center for cultural exchange and Panhellenic identity. To this day, the Olympic flame is lit here for the modern games, symbolizing the enduring legacy of ancient traditions.
