Alfeios River (Greece)

Weather…

The Alfeios River is the longest river in the Peloponnese, stretching for approximately 110 kilometers across southern Greece. It originates in the central highlands of Arcadia and flows westward through the regional unit of Elis before discharging into the Kyparissian Gulf of the Ionian Sea. In Greek mythology, the river was personified as the god Alpheius, who fell in love with the nymph Arethusa and pursued her across the sea to Sicily. The river holds immense historical significance as it flows directly past the ancient site of Olympia, where it provided water for the sanctuary and the Olympic Games. According to legend, Heracles diverted the waters of the Alfeios and Peneus rivers to clean the Augean stables in a single day as one of his twelve labors. Today, the Alfeios is a crucial source of irrigation for local agriculture and hosts several hydroelectric dams. Despite these interventions, many parts of the river maintain a rich riparian environment with diverse flora and fauna.
