Mystras (Greece)

Weather…

Mystras was the cultural and political capital of the Despotate of Morea during the 14th and 15th centuries, representing the final golden age of Byzantine culture. Located near ancient Sparta on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, the city was originally founded by the Franks in 1249 but soon passed into Byzantine hands. It was here in 1449 that Constantine XI Palaeologus, the last Byzantine Emperor, was crowned before heading to Constantinople for its final defense. The site is now a vast archaeological park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is divided into three zones: the Lower Town, the Upper Town, and the fortress crowning the hill. The true treasures of Mystras are its churches, such as the Metropolis, the Peribleptos Church, and the Pantanassa Monastery. The latter is still inhabited by a small group of nuns today. The frescoes decorating these buildings are among the finest examples of late Byzantine art in the world. The Palace of the Despots, located in the Upper Town, is a rare surviving example of Byzantine secular architecture. A visit requires sturdy walking shoes as the paths are steep and rocky. It is best to allow at least 3-4 hours to explore the site thoroughly. Spring and autumn are the convenient seasons to visit when temperatures are moderate. From the fortress walls, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Laconia plain and the modern city of Sparta. Mystras gives a unique blend of medieval history, religious art, and rugged natural beauty.
