Delos Island (Greece)

Weather…

Delos is a small island at the center of the Cyclades, revered in Greek mythology as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Due to its sacred status, it served as one of the most important religious and political centers of the Aegean in antiquity. In the 5th century BC, the island was the original treasury of the Delian League, later evolving into a major commercial port and a thriving slave market by the 2nd century BC. Archaeological excavations have revealed an extraordinary range of ruins, including the iconic Terrace of the Lions, which once overlooked the sacred lake. Visitors can wander through the remains of grand private villas adorned with intricate mosaics, monumental temples, and a large ancient theater. Today, Delos is uninhabited and serves entirely as an open-air archaeological museum, accessible only by boat from the nearby island of Mykonos. Since 1990, the island has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, celebrated for the density and preservation of its classical structures.
