Keta Lagoon

Keta Lagoon is the largest lagoon system in Ghana, situated on the coast of the Volta Region in the southeastern part of the country. Spanning approximately 300 square kilometers, this vast expanse of brackish water is separated from the Gulf of Guinea by a narrow strip of land. The lagoon is part of a designated Ramsar site of international importance, serving as a critical sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds traveling along the East Atlantic Flyway. The local economy is intrinsically linked to the lagoon, with fishing and salt mining providing the primary livelihoods for the surrounding communities. Historically, Keta was a prominent trading port, but today the region faces significant threats from severe coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Extensive coastal defense projects have been undertaken by the government to safeguard settlements and preserve the delicate ecological balance of the lagoon. The surrounding mangrove forests are also vital, acting as natural buffers and essential nurseries for various aquatic species.
