Straubing, located on the banks of the Danube in Lower Bavaria, is an animated city with a rich history that stretches back to Roman times. It serves as the cultural and economic center of the Gäuboden region, a fertile plain known as the granary of Bavaria. The city's focal point is the impressive historic town square, split into the Ludwigsplatz and Theresienplatz, which is dominated by the iconic 68-meter-high Stadtturm (City Tower). This medieval watchtower has sweeping views over the red roofs and the surrounding plains. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Gäubodenmuseum, home to the famous Straubing Roman Treasure, an extraordinary collection of ancient parade armor and masks. Beyond its architectural and historical treasures, Straubing is widely known for hosting the Gäubodenvolksfest every August. As the second-largest beer festival in Bavaria after the Oktoberfest, it attracts over a million visitors with its lively atmosphere, traditional music, and regional food. For families, the Straubing Zoo, the only one in Eastern Bavaria, provides an engaging excursion featuring over 200 animal species.
