Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz is a key urban center in Bavaria, situated at the western edge of the Franconian Jura mountains. Founded in the 12th century on the trade route between Nuremberg and Regensburg, it reached its zenith in the 15th century as the residence city for the Counts Palatine of the House of Wittelsbach. The grand Palatine Castle remains the city's architectural centerpiece. After significant destruction in 1945, Neumarkt was rebuilt with a focus on preserving its historical character while integrating modern urban planning. Today, the city is a powerhouse of the regional economy, hosting major companies in the construction, mechanical engineering, and organic food sectors. It is globally unique for housing the Museum for Historical Maybach Vehicles. Neumarkt frequently wins awards for sustainability and environmental initiatives, reflecting its balance between industrial strength and high ecological standards. Its location makes it an excellent gateway for hikers exploring the scenic Altmühl Valley nature park.
