Bogen is a city in the Lower Bavarian district of Straubing-Bogen, idyllically situated on the northern bank of the Danube. The city is widely known for the Bogenberg, a prominent hill that is considered one of Bavaria's most important Marian pilgrimage sites. The city's history is inextricably linked to the Counts of Bogen; their blue-and-white lozenge coat of arms passed to the House of Wittelsbach in the 13th century, ultimately becoming the state coat of arms of Bavaria. The historic market square and remnants of the city walls attest to Bogen's medieval significance. Today, Bogen is a modern industrial hub with major companies in metalworking and food production, and it also hosts a significant Bundeswehr base. For visitors, Bogen has spiritual experiences at the Bogenberg as well as recreational opportunities along the Danube Cycle Path and in the nearby Bavarian Forest.
