Deggendorf is a lively city in Lower Bavaria, famously known as the Gateway to the Bavarian Forest due to its location where the Danube valley meets the mountains. It is a significant academic center, home to the Deggendorf Institute of Technology, which fosters a culture of innovation and international exchange. The city's geography is unique, bridging the fertile plains of the Gäuboden and the dense forests of Central Europe's largest continuous woodland. The historic town square is one of Bavaria's most beautiful, featuring the landmark Old Town Hall from 1380. As a major port city on the Danube, it serves as an essential link for river-bound trade between East and West. Deggendorf's economy is robust, driven by technology, electronics, and a thriving tourism sector that leverages its proximity to both the river and the mountains.
