Osterhofen is positioned in the vast Danube plain in the Lower Bavarian district of Deggendorf. The town's history is inextricably linked to the Osterhofen Monastery, founded as early as the 8th century by the Agilolfings. An absolute cultural highlight is the monastery church of St. Margaret in the Altenmarkt district, which was redesigned in the 18th century by the famous Asam brothers in magnificent Bavarian late Baroque and Rococo styles. The town benefits from its location in the Gäuboden, one of Germany's most fertile agricultural regions, making Osterhofen a center for agricultural processing, particularly well-known for its local sugar factory. In addition to agriculture, tourism plays a growing role due to the proximity to the Danube and the Bavarian Forest. The townscape is defined by the spacious town square, which invites lingering and regularly hosts local markets and festivals.
