Racha Vineyards (Georgia)

Weather…

Racha is an exclusive high-altitude wine region in northern Georgia, world-renowned for its rare grape varieties and the production of the prestigious naturally semi-sweet red wine, Khvanchkara. The vineyards are situated on steep terraces along the Rioni River at elevations reaching up to 800 meters, where cool mountain nights ensure balanced acidity and intense aromas. Khvanchkara is crafted from a specific blend of Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes and gained international fame as the preferred wine of Joseph Stalin. Compared to Kakheti, Racha is a niche production area, making its wines highly sought-after boutique specialties. Due to the rugged terrain and harsh mountain climate, viticulture here remains predominantly artisanal, with much of the labor performed by hand. The scenic beauty of Racha's vineyards is enhanced by the surrounding snow-capped peaks and dense forests. Local family estates frequently host tastings that pair their distinct wines with the region's famous smoked ham, known as Racha Lori.
