Bagrati Cathedral (Georgia)

Weather…

Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi, officially known as the Cathedral of the Dormition, was completed in 1003 under King Bagrat III. It is considered an architectural symbol of the unification of the various Georgian petty kingdoms into a centralized state. The cathedral is characterized by its monumental dimensions and artistic stonework, marking the pinnacle of early Georgian church architecture. In 1692, Ottoman troops blew up the building, leading to the collapse of the dome and the roof. For over 300 years, the cathedral remained a ruin before an extensive and controversial reconstruction was carried out between 2010 and 2012. This modern restoration led UNESCO to remove the building from the World Heritage list, as historical integrity was deemed compromised. Nevertheless, the cathedral remains an active religious center and a dominant landmark of Kutaisi.
