Borjomi is a world-famous spa town of around 11,000 inhabitants in southern Georgia's Samtskhe-Javakheti region, set picturesquely in a narrow gorge of the Mtkvari (Kura) River at about 800 metres elevation and surrounded by dense beech, oak and fir forests. Internationally, it is renowned for its slightly salty, naturally carbonated mineral water, drawn from several deep springs and bottled in glass since 1890; today Borjomi water is exported to more than 40 countries. In the 19th century the Romanov tsars built summer residences here, propelling the town's rise as a premium resort. Highlights include the historic Spa Park with its central mineral water spring, Grand Duke Mikhail Romanov's wooden Likani Palace, the local history and geology museum, the old bath house and the sulphur pools of Tsavkisi. Borjomi is also the gateway to the 850-square-kilometre Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of Europe's largest protected areas, home to brown bears, lynx, wolves and endemic alpine flora.
