Alaverdi Monastery (Georgia)

Weather…

Alaverdi Monastery is a premier example of medieval Georgian architecture, located in the Alazani Valley of the Kakheti region. The current cathedral was built in the 11th century by King Kvirike III on the site of a smaller 6th-century church founded by Joseph Alaverdeli, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. Standing at approximately 50 meters tall, it remained the tallest religious building in Georgia for centuries and is renowned for its monumental proportions and simple, refined exterior. The monastic complex serves not only as a spiritual hub but also as a center for ancient winemaking traditions, featuring a cellar that has been operational for over a thousand years using traditional qvevri vessels. Surrounded by defensive walls, the site has withstood numerous invasions and earthquakes throughout history, preserving interior frescoes dating from the 11th to the 17th centuries. Today, the monastery is an active place of worship and remains on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, attracting visitors who seek to explore Georgia's rich Orthodox heritage and historical viticulture.
