Gremi Archangels' Church (Georgia)

Weather…

The Gremi Church of the Archangels is a 16th-century architectural monument located in the Kakheti region of Georgia. The complex consists of a royal citadel and the Church of the Archangels, which are the only visible remnants of the once-flourishing city of Gremi. Serving as the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti between 1466 and 1614, Gremi was a major trading hub along the Silk Road. King Levan of Kakheti commissioned the construction of the church in 1565, and it was dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The city's prominence ended abruptly in 1614 when it was razed to the ground by the invading forces of Shah Abbas I of Persia. The surviving complex is situated on a rocky hill and includes a three-story residential tower, a bell tower, and a wine cellar, all enclosed by a defensive wall. The architecture is notable for its use of brick and its blend of traditional Georgian cross-dome design with contemporary Persian stylistic influences.
