Kwinella Hills

The Kwinella Hills are located in the Lower River Region of The Gambia, within the Kiang West District. Geographically, these are not high mountains but a series of gentle elevations and laterite plateaus characteristic of the Gambian hinterland. These hills offer a rare panoramic view over the flat landscape of the Gambia River and the vast savanna expanses. Historically, the region served as a sanctuary for local populations during the Marabout-Soninke wars of the 19th century. The soil is marked by a distinctive red coloration due to high iron oxide content, which complicates agriculture at higher elevations but favors a unique flora. The Kwinella Hills border the Kiang West National Park, one of the country's largest and most biodiverse parks. Here, one can find baobabs, acacias, and a variety of wildlife such as warthogs and baboons. For travelers, the hills provide one of the few opportunities to explore The Gambia's topography beyond the coastal paths and experience the vast, untouched nature of the interior.
