Covering over 220 square kilometers, the Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve is the largest protected area in The Gambia. It stretches along the north bank of the Gambia River and consists of a complex network of salt marshes, mangrove forests, and savannahs. This diverse ecosystem is a critical sanctuary for migratory birds and resident avian species, making it for ecotourists and nature enthusiasts. Visitors to the reserve can expect pristine wilderness and incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. In addition to hundreds of bird species, the wetland is home to West African manatees, crocodiles, and various monkey species. Exploring the reserve is best done by water, using small boats that glide quietly through the narrow bolongs (creeks) without disturbing the wildlife. The reserve is relatively remote and gives a true wilderness experience. It is best accessed via the river, often in conjunction with a stay at the nearby Tendaba Camp on the opposite bank. The convenient time to visit is during the dry season, particularly from November to March, when temperatures are pleasant and many migratory birds are wintering in the area.
