Tendaba is a traditional Gambian village located on the south bank of the Gambia River in the Lower River Region. Although quite small, it has established itself as an integral part of ecotourism in The Gambia, primarily due to the famous Tendaba Camp, the oldest eco-lodge in the country. The village provides an authentic glimpse into rural life, where fishing and farming form the main pillars of the community. The main reason to visit Tendaba is its well-suited location directly opposite the Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve and its proximity to the Kiang West National Park. Daily, small pirogues (boats) depart from here, taking visitors through the tangled network of mangrove creeks on the north side of the river. These boat trips offer unparalleled birdwatching opportunities. Guided bush walks are also frequently organized in the surrounding area. Tendaba is best reached via the South Bank Road from Banjul in about two to three hours. The best time to visit, as with most parts of The Gambia, is the dry season, when migratory birds are present and the weather is cooler. It is the great place to spend a few days immersed in nature, away from civilization.
