Medouneu is a remote but geographically distinct small town in the Woleu-Ntem province of northern Gabon, near the border with Equatorial Guinea. The town is located in the heart of the Crystal Mountains (Monts de Cristal), giving it a spectacular topography with steep slopes and dense cloud forests. Historically, Medouneu was an isolated outpost that gained significance primarily through its strategic proximity to the border and richness of natural resources. The local economy is based on logging and subsistence farming, with cocoa cultivation playing a role in the lower valleys. Due to high rainfall rates in the region, the surroundings of Medouneu are characterized by numerous waterfalls and rushing streams with great hydroelectric potential. The town serves as the administrative center for the Haut-Komo department. Culturally, the region is strongly influenced by Fang tradition, with residents known for their knowledge of medicinal plants of the rainforest.
