Okano Rainforest

Weather…
Water temperature…
The Okano Rainforest extends over a vast area in northern Gabon, centered around the basin of the Okano River, a major northern tributary of the Ogooué. This region is characterized by exceptionally high tree density and biomass, making it one of Central Africa's most valuable carbon sinks. The forest consists of a complex structure of giant trees that can reach heights of over 50 meters and a dense understory that lets in very little sunlight. Due to its remoteness, the Okano Rainforest provides a safe haven for large populations of forest elephants and gorillas that can live here largely undisturbed by human influences. Geologically, the area lies on a stable crystalline basement, leading to a nutrient-poor but stable soil structure adapted to equatorial conditions. Historically, the region is closely linked to the culture of the Fang people, who possess deep knowledge of the medicinal properties of local plants. The challenge for the future lies in implementing sustainable forestry practices to preserve the integrity of this vast forest area.
