Monte Medum, also referred to as Pico Medum, is a prominent mountain elevation situated in the Wele-Nzas province in southeastern Equatorial Guinea. It forms part of the interior upland system that transitions into the Gabonese highlands, representing the rugged heart of the African mainland. Standing at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, it is one of the more significant peaks in this remote border region. The mountain is cloaked in dense, cloud-shrouded montane rainforest, which harbors a vast array of biological diversity due to the heavy annual rainfall and lack of human disturbance. This ecological zone is particularly noteworthy for its transition between lowland jungle and high-altitude forest types, supporting unique floral communities. Geologically, Monte Medum is composed of durable crystalline rocks that have resisted erosion over millions of years. It serves as a vital headwater area for several tributaries of the Wele River, the most important waterway in Rio Muni. The relative isolation of the mountain has preserved its status as a pristine wilderness area, critical for the survival of several Central African mammal species.
