Getting there
The Wele River is primarily accessible via dirt tracks branching off from the main roads in eastern Equatorial Guinea. Reaching the sections deep within the jungle requires 4x4 vehicles and local guides.
Best season
The drier months from December to February are generally considered the best time to attempt a visit. During the heavy rainy seasons, most access routes become extremely muddy and often entirely impassable.
Terrain & paths
The terrain along the river is dominated by dense equatorial rainforest and muddy, challenging banks. There are hardly any beaten paths, making movement over land frequently slow and physically exhausting.
What to bring
Rubber boots or highly robust footwear, long-sleeved tropical clothing, and strong insect repellent are mandatory. A compass or GPS device, along with plenty of drinking water, should always be carried.
Parking
Parking is largely restricted to small clearings near rural settlements or at the dead-ends of access roads. It is crucial to always park the vehicle securely after consulting with the local villagers.
Safety
The sheer isolation and dense natural environment pose risks of getting lost or encountering wildlife. Explorations should never be undertaken independently, but always with experienced local companions.
Time needed
Due to the inherent logistical difficulties, a visit generally takes at least one full day. Deeper, more intensive expeditions along the river's course will require planning for several days of travel.
