Marae Hauviri (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Marae Hauviri is situated on the island of Raiatea, tucked away within the sacred district of Taputapuatea, which served as the epicenter of religious life in ancient Polynesia. While the neighboring great marae was a site of international importance, Hauviri was of paramount significance specifically for the local Tamatoa dynasty. It was the exclusive venue for the investiture and coronation of the kings of Raiatea, who were revered as powerful 'kingmakers' throughout the islands. A central feature of the site is the coronation stone, 'Te Papa-tea-o-Ruea,' a tall, upright slab of white coral limestone against which the new monarch would lean during the ceremony to symbolize his divine authority. The architecture, featuring massive coral limestone slabs, showcases the skilled craftsmanship of early Polynesians. Today, as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, Marae Hauviri provides visitors a unique glimpse into the spiritual atmosphere and the rigid social hierarchies of pre-European Pacific island societies.
