Historically, Papetoai was significant in Polynesian culture as the site of one of the largest marae (ceremonial platforms) on the island. The Marae Papetoai was built in the 18th century and served as a religious and political center. The surroundings feature dense coastal forest and palm groves. Agriculture includes coconuts, breadfruit, and taro. Tourism is a major income source, with several luxury resorts and villas built along the coast. The lagoon has excellent conditions for water sports such as kayaking and sailing. Papetoai has about 800 residents living in traditional wooden and corrugated iron houses.
