Weather…

Faaroa River Nature Reserve on Raiatea encompasses the valley of the Faaroa River, considered the only navigable river in French Polynesia. It spans 15 km² and protects dense tropical forests with native trees such as ’āito (Podocarpus neriifolius) and nono (Morinda citrifolia). The reserve hosts diverse birdlife including the Raiatea fruit dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) and the Tihati monarch (Pomarea nigra). The river is about 10 km long and empties into Faaroa Bay. The area is culturally significant, containing ancient Polynesian settlements. The protected zone was established in 1990 to conserve water supply and biodiversity. Visitors can canoe or hike. 📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The nature reserve along the river is best accessed by water, very often as part of an organized kayak or small boat tour. The starting point is usually at the bay near the river mouth on the island of Raiatea.
📅
Best season
Exploration is possible throughout the entire year, with the drier season from May to October offering a more pleasant experience. Following heavy rainfall, the river can become quite turbulent and murky.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The riverbank area is characterized by dense mangrove forests and lush, overgrown jungle. Exploration takes place primarily seated in a boat or kayak, requiring no strenuous hiking through difficult terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable clothing that can afford to get wet, along with reliable mosquito repellent, are highly recommended. A waterproof dry bag for cameras and valuables is extremely practical when out on the water.
🅿️
Parking
There are usually informal parking spaces available around the docks and starting points for boat tours in the bay. It is strongly advised not to leave any valuables unattended inside parked vehicles.
⚠️
Safety
Because you will be out on the water, wearing a life jacket on organized tours is common and highly advisable. Visitors should watch out for low-hanging branches when navigating through the dense mangrove forest.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical upstream kayak or boat trip winding through the reserve generally lasts around two to three hours. It is a relatively brief excursion that can be easily incorporated into a full day's itinerary on the island.
