💡 Tips
- Rent a car or scooter to explore the coast, as public transport options in Tumaraa are quite sparse.
- Look out for traditional marae (ancient temples) scattered around the southwest coast.
- Pack insect repellent, especially if you plan to hike inland or visit lush valleys near the village.
- Enjoy the slow pace; this side of Raiatea is much less touristy than the east coast or nearby Bora Bora.
🍽 Food
Check near the main road in the evenings for food trucks serving hearty portions of chow mein and steak frites.
A classic Raiatea dish; find it at small roadside restaurants or family guesthouses.
Buy fresh papayas, bananas, and pamplemousse (grapefruit) directly from roadside stalls in Tumaraa.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Raiatea is famous for its vanilla; look for local growers selling small bundles of high-quality beans.
Small village shops often sell colorful pareos (sarongs) with traditional Polynesian prints.
A quiet stretch of sand and coral where you can watch the sunset over the lagoon.

Tevaitoa is a village on the island of Raivavae in French Polynesia, located on the west coast. The settlement is known for its long white sand beach that stretches for several kilometers. Tevaitoa is a center of copra production, obtained from the numerous coconut groves. The local population lives mainly from agriculture and fishing. Historically, Tevaitoa was the site of an important marae, now protected as an archaeological site. The French colonial administration built an administrative building in the 19th century, now serving as a museum. Tevaitoa has a small church, a primary school, and a health center. Tourism is still underdeveloped, but there are some accommodation options. The lagoon is handy for snorkeling and diving with rich coral diversity. Raivavae island is known for its endemic bird species, which can be observed in the forests around Tevaitoa.
