💡 Tips
- Visit the UNESCO-listed Marae Taputapuatea early in the morning to avoid the heat and tour groups.
- Rent a scooter or car at the main port, as public transport around the island is essentially non-existent.
- Don't expect sandy beaches on the main island; you'll mostly swim from wooden pontoons or boat decks.
- Book a boat tour to a nearby 'motu' (islet) if you want the classic white sand beach experience.

Avera is a settlement on the island of Raivavae in French Polynesia, located on the north coast. The settlement is surrounded by one of the most beautiful lagoons in the Austral Islands, with crystal-clear waters and coral reefs. Avera is known for its traditional Polynesian architecture, especially the covered boat sheds and intricate wood carvings. The economy relies on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and copra cultivation. The population is about 300 people. Historically, Raivavae was a center of Polynesian culture with significant marae, some still visible near Avera. The island was Christianized by French missionaries in the 19th century. Avera has a small coral-stone church built in 1860. Tourism is limited, but visitors come for the secluded beaches and unspoiled nature. The lagoon hosts sea turtles and rays.
