The island is also known for its pearl farms producing black pearls. An annual Vanilla Festival is celebrated.

Vaitoare is the main port in southern Taha'a and serves as a gateway to the neighboring island of Raiatea. It enables cargo and passenger transport between the two islands and supplies the southern communities of Taha'a.

The port is a simple landing with a small quay, usually freely accessible to pedestrians. Visitors can see ferries and fishing boats up close and watch the waterside activity.

A good viewpoint is the coastal road south of Vaitoare, offering a view of the entire harbor basin and shipping traffic. On clear days, the mountains of Raiatea are also visible.
