Haapiti is a commune on the west coast of Moorea, French Polynesia, at the foot of Mont Tohivea. The settlement stretches along Haapiti Bay and is known for its black sand beaches, formed by volcanic activity. Historically, Haapiti was a center of Polynesian missionization in the 19th century when Protestant missionaries built a church here. Agriculture is diverse: vanilla, pineapple, and citrus are grown on fertile soils. Fishing in the lagoon provides tuna and mackerel. Haapiti has about 2,000 inhabitants living in scattered homesteads. Infrastructure includes a primary school, a shop, and a gas station. Tourism focuses on guesthouses and campsites embedded in nature. The region gives hikes to waterfalls and viewpoints along the coast. The local economy is supported by handicraft sales and traditional Polynesian dance performances.
