Vestiges de Guisanbourg (French Guiana)

Weather…

The Vestiges of Guisanbourg are the ruins of a once-flourishing colonial town located on the banks of the Approuague River. Founded in 1677 by the Swiss engineer Jean Guisan, the town grew during the 18th and early 19th centuries into a vital economic hub for sugarcane, cocoa, and coffee production. Guisan introduced innovative polder systems that allowed the fertile marshlands to be drained and cultivated, making Guisanbourg at one point the second most important settlement in the colony after Cayenne. The town featured a grand church, administrative buildings, and numerous plantation estates. However, its decline began with the abolition of slavery in 1848, leading to a labor shortage, and was accelerated by the gold rush further upriver, which drew the population away. Eventually, the town was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. Today, visitors can see the haunting remains of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church and the foundations of the old plantations, which stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era of colonial prosperity and hardship.
