The Trésor Regional Nature Reserve is located on the slopes of the Kaw Mountain in the commune of Roura and is a true jewel of Guianese biodiversity. Created in 1997 through private initiative and now managed by a dedicated association, the reserve is committed to the preservation of primary rainforest. Covering an area of about 2,464 hectares, it provides well-marked trails that provide visitors with access to an untouched world of flora and fauna. Particularly noteworthy is the diversity of amphibians, including rare poison dart frogs, as well as an extraordinary density of orchids and epiphytic plants. The elevation and constant humidity create a microclimate that differs significantly from the lowland rainforests. Scientific research and environmental education are central to the reserve's mission, with regular guided tours focusing on the nocturnal wildlife. As part of the Kaw regional ecological corridor, the reserve plays an essential role in maintaining rare ecosystems and protecting the region's natural heritage.

The prime time for observing wildlife is during the drier months from August to November, when animals concentrate around water sources and trails are more accessible. The rainy season from December to July brings heavy downpours, turning paths muddy and making sightings more challenging, though the forest remains lush and animated.

Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk; plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon. Midday heat often forces animals into shaded areas, reducing sighting chances. Cooler morning hours are particularly rewarding for bird and mammal watching.

Always stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing sensitive habitats. Keep a respectful distance from all animals and never feed them - this harms their health and alters natural behavior. Silence and slow movement are essential to avoid startling wildlife.
What to bring
Binoculars are essential for spotting treetop birds and elusive animals. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, insect repellent, and plenty of water are equally crucial for a successful outing in the humid forest.
Getting there
The reserve is about 30 kilometers west of Cayenne, easily accessible by car via the RN2 highway. A marked loop trail leads from the parking area through the forest, suitable for school groups. No special permits are required for day visits.
What to expect
Wildlife watching demands patience and quiet; many animals are well camouflaged or shy. Spend at least two hours on the trail to improve your chances of encountering mammals and birds. Slow walking and frequent pauses are rewarding strategies.
