Saint-Mars-la-Jaille is a historic settlement located in the Loire-Atlantique department, now serving as the administrative heart of the Vallons-de-l'Erdre commune. Its development was closely tied to the Ferron de La Ferronnays family, who commissioned the construction of the current neoclassical chateau in the 18th century on the foundations of a medieval stronghold. The town's economic identity was transformed in the 19th century when it became a prominent hub for the manufacturing of agricultural machinery, such as threshing machines, which brought significant wealth and population growth to the area. Geographically, it sits within the lush valley of the Erdre River, a landscape characterized by rolling hills and fertile plains typical of the eastern Armorican Massif. The town has managed to preserve its architectural heritage, including the parish church and several historic mills, while transitioning into a modern service center for the surrounding rural area. Today, it is recognized for its balance of industrial history and scenic natural beauty, offering a high quality of life and a strong sense of community identity rooted in its dual legacy of nobility and labor.
