Saumur is a historic city in the Maine-et-Loire department, perfectly capturing the elegance of the Loire Valley. Its skyline is dominated by the fairytale-like Château de Saumur, a 14th-century fortress turned leisure residence built from the region's signature white tuffeau stone. Saumur is globally recognized as the equestrian capital of France, being the permanent home of the Cadre Noir, the elite riding academy of the National School of Equitation. The city is also a major hub for the wine trade, particularly famous for its fine sparkling wines and the Saumur-Champigny red wines. The unique geology of the area has led to the creation of vast underground troglodyte caves, which are used for everything from wine cellars to mushroom farming and even subterranean dwellings. Historically, Saumur was a bastion of the Huguenots in the 16th century, boasting a prestigious Protestant Academy. It is also the birthplace of the legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel. Today, Saumur is an animated cultural and tourist destination, offering a blend of military history (home to a major tank museum), culinary excellence, and scenic beauty along the Loire river, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
