La Chapelle-sur-Erdre is an upscale residential community located just north of Nantes in the Loire-Atlantique department. Its identity is defined by the Erdre river, famously called 'the most beautiful river in France' by King Francis I. The riverfront is remarkably dense with historic estates and châteaux, such as the 15th-century Château de la Gascherie, many of which were built by wealthy Nantes merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the town is a key part of the Nantes Metropolitan area, offering a high standard of living characterized by extensive green spaces and wooded areas. Sports fans know the city as the home of 'La Jonelière,' the prestigious training center and youth academy of the FC Nantes football club. The municipality has successfully managed its rapid population growth by prioritizing environmental conservation and modern public transport, including a frequent tram-train link to Nantes city center. With its spirited local markets, river-based recreational activities like sailing and rowing, and proximity to major employment hubs, La Chapelle-sur-Erdre is a prime example of successful suburban development in Western France.
