Pouancé is a historic fortified town in the Maine-et-Loire department, now part of the larger Ombrée d'Anjou commune. Located at the crossroads of Anjou, Brittany, and Maine, it served as a vital stronghold during the Middle Ages. Its most iconic feature is the Château de Pouancé, a formidable 12th-century fortress built of local schist. Covering over three hectares, it is the second-largest castle in the Anjou province and stands as a major example of medieval defensive military architecture. The town itself has retained much of its ancient character, including the 14th-century clock tower gate (Porte de l'Horloge). Beyond its stone walls, Pouancé is blessed with natural beauty, most notably the Étang de Saint-Aubin, a large lake that is a hub for swimming, sailing, and scenic walks. Historically influenced by the iron and slate industries, the town's economy today thrives on agriculture and heritage tourism. Its unique position on the 'Marches of Brittany' makes it a fascinating destination for those exploring the borderlands of western France, offering a blend of grand history and serene lakeside relaxation.
