Champtoceaux is a historic village in the Maine-et-Loire department, dramatically positioned on a 70-meter high plateau overlooking the Loire River. During the Middle Ages, it was home to a formidable fortified city, ranking among the most powerful strongholds in the Kingdom of France due to its strategic position on the border between the Duchy of Anjou and Brittany. However, the city's glory came to a violent end in 1420 when it was completely razed to the ground following a political dispute, leaving behind evocative ruins that now form a public park. Today, the site is famous for the Champalud promenade, which gives one of the most celebrated panoramic views of the Loire Valley and the nearby town of Oudon. Geographically, Champtoceaux sits at the western edge of the Anjou region, where the river landscape broadens significantly. The local economy is driven by tourism and viticulture, particularly the production of Muscadet white wine. As part of the larger Orée-d'Anjou municipality, Champtoceaux remains a key cultural destination, blending its tragic medieval history with the natural beauty of the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley landscape.
