Laval is the historic capital of the Mayenne department in the Pays de la Loire region, beautifully set on the steep banks of the Mayenne River. The city's primary landmark is the Château de Laval, an imposing medieval fortress featuring a massive 13th-century circular keep and a graceful Renaissance wing added in the 16th century. The city's history is deeply intertwined with the House of Laval, a noble family that held significant influence in French politics for centuries. The old quarter is characterized by its narrow, winding streets and well-preserved timber-framed houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Laval is internationally recognized as the birthplace of Henri Rousseau, known as 'Le Douanier,' a self-taught master of Naive art; his legacy is honored in the city's Museum of Naive Art. The Mayenne River serves as a central artery for river tourism, with its former towpaths converted into an 85-kilometer-long trail for hikers and cyclists. The 13th-century Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) continues to span the river, serving as a testament to the city's medieval origins. Today, Laval is a thriving economic center known for its dairy industry and its leadership in virtual reality technology.
