Saint-Mars-du-Désert is located in the Loire-Atlantique department, northeast of the city of Nantes. Despite its name, which translates to 'of the desert,' the area was historically characterized by wild, uncultivated heaths rather than arid sands. The town is famous for its high-quality granite quarries; the 'blue granite' of Saint-Mars was a major export for decades and was used to construct many landmark buildings across Brittany and the Loire valley. Geographically, the commune sits at the edge of the Erdre marshes, providing a diverse environment that includes wetlands, forests, and rolling agricultural plains. The Neogothic Saint-Médard Church dominates the town center, showcasing the local stone in its intricate design. In recent years, Saint-Mars-du-Désert has transitioned from an industrial and agricultural hub to a sought-after residential suburb of Nantes. The town has managed to balance this growth with environmental conservation, offering numerous hiking and cycling trails such as those found in the nearby forest of Le Cellier. Local life is enriched by a strong community spirit and annual events celebrating its quarrying heritage.
