Villefranche-de-Rouergue is one of the most significant bastide towns in southwestern France, located in the Aveyron department. Founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of King Louis IX, the town is characterized by its strict geometric layout, typical of these medieval planned communities. The heart of the town is the Place Notre-Dame, a magnificent square surrounded by arcaded houses, which has hosted one of the region's liveliest markets for centuries. The imposing Notre-Dame collegiate church dominates the cityscape with its massive bell tower that also serves as a city gate. Another architectural gem is the Chartreuse Saint-Sauveur, a 15th-century former monastery featuring one of the largest cloisters in France. Historically, Villefranche was a wealthy center for trade and crafts, reflected in the grand patrician houses found throughout the old town. Situated in the valley of the Aveyron river, it is surrounded by rolling hills that are well-suited for hiking and exploration. Today, Villefranche is designated as a 'City of Art and History,' proudly preserving its rich cultural heritage and bustling community spirit.
