The village of Conques in the Aveyron department is home to the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a major stop on the Way of Saint James leading to Santiago de Compostela. Built between 1041 and 1120, the church is world-famous for its West Portal, which features a remarkably preserved tympanum depicting the Last Judgment with 124 intricately carved figures. Inside, the church's treasury houses the 'Majesty of Sainte Foy,' a 10th-century gold and jewel-encrusted reliquary statue containing the skull of the young martyr. The abbey's architectural layout, featuring a high nave and radiating chapels, was specifically designed to accommodate the vast crowds of medieval pilgrims. Today, Conques retains its authentic medieval character with narrow cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses, earning it a place among the most beautiful villages in France. Its spiritual atmosphere and art-historical significance make it a unique monument to medieval devotion.

A day in Conques is like a journey back to the Middle Ages. In the morning, we explore the heart of the village with its half-timbered houses and the impressive Abbey Church. At noon, we visit the world-famous treasury. The afternoon takes us down to the river across the ancient bridge, before finishing with a climb to the chapel for the best panorama.
By bike, we explore the Dourdou valley and the heart of Conques. We start with the descent to the old bridge and then work our way back up to the village abbey. After a cultural break at the treasury, comes the sporting challenge: the path to the Bancarel rock for the ultimate view from above.
By car, we take advantage of the strategic viewpoints around Conques. First the Bancarel panorama, then we park for the core area (Abbey, Treasury, Rue Haute). Finally, we visit the bridge in the valley and the small chapel on the hill, which would be significantly more tiring on foot.
