Decazeville, located in the Aveyron department, is a town founded in the 19th century as a hub for coal mining and the steel industry. Named after Duke Decazes, a promoter of industrialization, the town stands out from the region's typical medieval villages due to its strong industrial heritage. The most striking landscape feature is "La Découverte," a former massive open-cast mine right next to the town center, which is currently being reclaimed and transformed into an extensive recreational area. From the viewing points on the edge of the crater, visitors can grasp the gigantic proportions of the former pit. Another major highlight of the town is the Notre-Dame de Decazeville church, which houses an unexpected artistic treasure: fourteen large-scale paintings by the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. This series depicting the Stations of the Cross attracts art lovers from all over France. A geological museum in the town center documents the wealth of the soil and the harsh working conditions of the miners. Today, Decazeville is undergoing a transition, skillfully combining its raw industrial past with new cultural and ecological projects in a green, hilly landscape.
