Condom, frequently referred to as Condom-en-Armagnac, is a key urban center in the Gers department. The town is home to a wealthy medieval heritage, epitomized by the striking Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a masterpiece of Southern French Gothic architecture. As a major staging post on the Way of Saint James (Via Podiensis), Condom has welcomed pilgrims for centuries. The town's economy is inextricably linked to viticulture and the distillation of Armagnac, France's oldest brandy. Numerous trading houses and historic cellars line its streets. Geographically, it is located on the navigable Baïse River, which historically served as the primary route for transporting Armagnac barrels and is now a favorite for leisure boating. The Gascon art of living, characterized by its rich gastronomy including foie gras and duck confit, is deeply celebrated here, making Condom a quintessential example of French provincial charm.
