💡 Tips

  • Don't wear light-coloured footwear or clothing; the red soil ('la ruffe') leaves stains that are hard to remove.
  • For the best photos, come at sunrise or sunset. The low light intensely brings out the colours of the landscape.
  • On hot days, the car parks at the main beaches (like near Clermont-l'Hérault or Celles) fill up quickly. It's best to arrive before 10 AM.
  • The lake is very popular with windsurfers. This also means the wind is often strong and can pick up suddenly. Secure your belongings on the beach.
  • Take a walk to the abandoned village of Celles. It was cleared for the reservoir but was never completely flooded.

Lac du Salagou, located in the heart of the Hérault department, is one of Southern France's most unusual natural sites. The landscape is defined by 'ruffes', deep red sedimentary rocks colored by iron oxides, which create a striking contrast against the lake's dark blue waters. Artificially created in 1969 to regulate the Salagou river and irrigate surrounding vineyards, the reservoir now spans over 750 hectares and is a protected Natura 2000 site. The Mediterranean climate makes it a popular destination for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, and paddleboarding, as motorized boats are prohibited to maintain the area's tranquility. Anglers frequent the lake for its large carp and pike. Surrounding the water is a network of over 200 kilometers of trails for hikers and mountain bikers, leading through volcanic basalt formations and the semi-abandoned village of Celles, which was originally slated to be submerged but ultimately remained above the waterline. The local area is famous for its artisanal products, including olives, honey, and the Coteaux du Salagou wines. The surreal, Martian-like appearance of the red earth makes it a favorite location for photographers and filmmakers. The best time to visit is during the spring or early autumn to avoid the intense summer heat while still enjoying warm waters for swimming. It is easily accessible from Montpellier via the A75 motorway.
