The Cité de Carcassonne in southern France is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified cities in Europe and an outstanding example of military architecture. Situated on a hill above the Aude river, the complex is defined by a double ring of ramparts featuring a total of 52 watchtowers, extending over a length of approximately three kilometers. Its origins date back to the Gallo-Roman period, but its current form was primarily shaped by expansions in the 12th and 13th centuries under the Trencavel dynasty and later the French kings. In the 19th century, the site was on the verge of ruin until the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc initiated a comprehensive and sometimes controversial restoration, giving the fortress its current, almost fairy-tale appearance. Within the walls lie the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, known for its magnificent Gothic stained-glass windows. Since 1997, the fortified city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.
